While the overall burden has decreased, the study by Hiroshima University reveals that long COVID persists for some individuals, with symptoms lasting years after infection.
One of the key findings of the study is the variation in long-term recovery patterns across different pandemic periods. The researchers found that adults infected during the Delta period had the highest rate of lingering symptoms, with an estimated 47% still reporting symptoms six months after infection. This rate dropped to 23% during the Omicron wave in 2022 and 21% during Omicron infections in 2024. Children, on the other hand, generally fared better, with symptoms persisting in only about one-quarter to one-third of cases throughout all epidemic waves.
The study also revealed that recovery speed differed by infection period and age. Symptoms resolved more slowly in people infected during the Delta period, while those infected during Omicron waves recovered faster. Younger age was strongly associated with quicker recovery, particularly for children aged 12 years and younger.
